DURO, the innovation leader in diamond blade technology for the construction industry introduce HDF (High Density Forging Technology). HDF is perhaps, the most important step forward in diamond segment manufacturing since the dry cutting blade was launched more than 20 years ago. In this new DURO HDF process, instead of the diamond segments being sintered slowly in a tunnel furnace, like all other diamond segments manufactured throughout the world, HDF segments are simultaneously heated to very high temperatures and pressed (stamped) to form a complete diamond segment within seconds, before being laser welded to the steel core.

HDF brings many advantages, not least the dramatic increase in laser weld strength as can be seen in the video (top right). The HDF blade is shown being put under immense side-load pressure at up to 50N/mm2, whilst still not breaking the weld and simply bending the steel core. An unnamed competitor product is also shown in the same test failing at way below 15N/mm2, which is below the European legal standard EN13236. In use this could have been catastrophic!

The first products are now on the market and are available in several different specifications to cover a broad range of applications, including new dual purpose concrete / asphalt blades for the utility sector.

HDF Segment - Laser Weld - X-Ray

Using the new HDF segments we acheive near to zero porosity and a complete laser weld with astounding strength testing at more than 40Nmm2 or 60% above the European standard EN13236 of 15Nmm2.

 

Traditional Sintered Segment - Laser Weld - X-Ray

The white areas clearly visible under X-Ray are invisible to the human eye and therefore this weld would most likely pass quality control and inspection and end up on machines being used at upto 220MPH. The high porosity and gaps in the weld result in lower weld strength levels, inconsistancy and potential weld failure, which can cause significant safety issues.
